Christian Conservatives May Support 3rd Party?

According to a NY Times blog, Christian conservatives such as James Dobson are considering supporting a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.  My first reaction to this was, "not this one!"  Then I thought about it.

If Giuliani wins the GOP nomination, he has no chance to defeat Hillary.  This is because the base will not be energized to vote for him.  It's not enough to threaten the base with Hillary.  That will motivate some of us.  But I think many conservatives, especially Christian conservatives, need to believe in the person and the issues they represent to get them out to vote.  With Rudy you get strong security but you also get abortion, gay marriage, and a less than exemplary personal history.  Not a recipe for strong, positive, get-out-and-vote feelings.

So, if the GOP nominates Rudy, he will lose against Hillary.  Why not take a stand for the issues?  Hillary will still win but by defeating Giuliani with a third-party candidate we may force the GOP to return to its roots and field a stronger candidate in 2012.  Assuming, of course, we're not all speaking Arabic or Chinese by that time.

A Perfect Republican Candidate?

Remember the election from almost 11 months ago?  So many Republicans were literally kicked out, all for acting in my opinion as Republicans in name only (RINO's).  As a group, including some who are still there, they voted on bills as though the taxpayer's pockets were bottomless.

Now Patrick Ruffini (here and here) refers to someone within the GOP who could very well be their guiding North Star.  That person is Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin.

Two major planks of her political career have been ethics (check her whistle blowing background) and her desire to kill off pork.  She was a major player behind the death of the "Bridge to Nowhere".

I think she would make a great candidate for any position within our great country.  Any current legislator, of any stripe, should take note of her accomplishments and her poll numbers AFTER her successes.  As Patrick notes: "
A poll out last month put Palin's approval rating at 84%, and Fred Barnes has noted that she probably America's most popular elected official in any party. "

Take note, those of you seeking election or re-election.  Ethics and being conservative fiscally ARE important.

Civics Quiz

So you think you know civics?  Try out this quiz I read about over at SCSU Scholars.  It was very challenging.  I had to guess at a few of the answers but I didn't do too badly for a computer geek:

You answered 52 out of 60 correctly — 86.67 %
Average score for this quiz during September: 74.8%
Average score since September 18, 2007: 74.8%

In case anyone out there is still reading us, Colonel Steve and I are still alive.  I don't post very often anyway but the past couple of weeks have been crazy because of a deadline at work.  I know Colonel Steve has been extra busy at his job, too.

So, our apologies to all.  Hopefully we will soon be posting on things other than how busy we are!

Jane Wyman Dies

I always considered Ronald Reagan a man with a high amount of class.  This class showed in the statements he said and in the two wives he had.

This morning, his first wife, Jane Wyman, died at the age of 93
.  Among her very classy quotes through the years were the following:

After Reagan became governor of California and then president of the United States, Wyman kept a decorous silence about her ex-husband, who had married actress Nancy Davis. In a 1968 newspaper interview, Wyman explained the reason:

"It's not because I'm bitter or because I don't agree with him politically. I've always been a registered Republican. But it's bad taste to talk about ex-husbands and ex-wives, that's all. Also, I don't know a damn thing about politics."

A few days after Reagan died on June 5, 2004, Wyman broke her silence, saying: "America has lost a great president and a great, kind and gentle man."

More Government Transparency

I have spoken before on the Courier-Journal's link to political donations made in Kentucky's May Primary.  Now the CJ has a link to search salaries of employees in regional governments.

It's rare for me to say this, but way to go Courier-Journal!!

More "Bumper Stickers and Liberals"

Since my post on liberal bumper stickers, I ran across this post at Coffee with CrankyBeach:

Be Careful...

... how you place your bumper stickers.

I didn't have the camera, so I can't prove it... but the car in front of me just now had two stickers on the rear window. The one on the left read "Obama '08." To its immediate right: "He's not MY president!"

Interesting message. Somehow I don't think they meant it the way it comes out.

Amazing that we haven't seen more of that with liberals and their stickers.  Think of all those liberal car rear ends, full of stickers, as though they were holding the car together.  Someway somehow I'm sure there's more of these out there!
