GOP's Problem Child

Daybyday20070829_3 I have been rather impressed that for the most part, when conservatives have real legal problems and legal indictments, they end up seeing the light of day.  Even in cartoons.

I am also impressed with the push from the minority leadership of the Senate to immediately call for ethics committee hearings on Larry Craig.  I do understand and agree with Captain Ed's sentiment that the people of Idaho should have the final say in who they have represent them in the Senate.  If they want someone like him to continue representing them, that is their problem.  But the minority leadership in the Senate is also taking the right move in pushing him from senior committee posts.  They have as much at stake in choosing their leadership as the people of Idaho have in choosing their Senators.

However this turns out, I believe the Republicans moves are much more honorable than the other party's dealings with ones like William "cold cash" Jefferson.

A Larry Craig Poll

Michelle Malkin has a poll about whether Idaho Senator Larry Craig should resign.  My response: h___ yes.

He should resign because:
1. His actions in the case make him look like a fool.
2. The people of Idaho deserve better than a fool representing them in the Senate.

If he tries to hang on until the next election he not only risks not being re-elected but he helps the Democrats and the MSM make their case about the level of corruption in his party (while ignoring the corruption in their own).  It would be better for him to make a clean break, get out of the limelight, and try to salvage his life with his family.

Tops in Absurd Laws

The Chinese government has topped all with the latest in absurd laws.  They are now making reincarnation, without government permission, illegal.

After you get off the floor laughing....think about it.  If reincarnation is true, just how does a government control it?  Another angle.....many governments have been accused of playing God....now one is saying they are really going to be God.

Of course, as a Christian, reincarnation isn't even on my radar.  Therefore, it rather surprised me to see this statistic at the end of the article:

According to a 2005 Gallup poll, 20 percent of all U.S. adults believe in reincarnation. Recent surveys by the Barna Group, a Christian research nonprofit, have found that a quarter of U.S. Christians, including 10 percent of all born-again Christians, embrace it as their favored end-of-life view.

Huh?  Anybody read Hebrews 9:27 lately?  I take it as humans dying once...not over and over again.

Bumper Stickers and Liberals

I'm sure you've noticed the liberal car going down the street...bumper stickers galore on the back of it.  Almost as thought the stickers were holding the car together.

Saturday's Curious-Journal had this article on the "expressing my opinion"-ness of bumper stickers.  After reading it a second time, I notices that ALL of the sticker examples in the text and in pictures were either politically neutral (sports teams or scuba diving stickers) or politically left stickers (Hurricane Bush, or He is not my president).

Uh, balanced reporting?  I think not.  I've seen stickers like "Gun Control means using both hands" or "W for president" a lot around Louisville.  It's not like an owner of one of these would be soooooo hard to find.

Conservatives Don't Read?

I'm a couple of days late responding to this news story about how liberals read more than conservatives.  That's because I had to try to remember all the books I've read so far this year.  Here is what I came up with:

  1. Parenting book #1 (Sorry, name omitted for privacy!)
  2. Parenting book #2
  3. Parenting book #3
  4. The Pursuit of God by A. W. Tozer
  5. Reaching Muslims for Christ by William Saal
  6. Cadmian's Choice by L.E. Modesitt
  7. Eldest by Christopher Paolini
  8. Through Wolf's Eyes by Jane Lindskold
  9. The Dragon of Despair by Jane Lindskold
  10. Wolf Captured by Jane Lindskold
  11. Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb
  12. Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb
  13. Mad Ship by Robin Hobb
  14. Night Mare by Piers Anthony
  15. Engaging the Enemy by Elizabeth Moon
  16. Fearless by Jack Campbell

You can see the books I am currently reading on the right side of the blog.  I don't often update that list for fiction because I tend to read it very quickly!

These are the magazines and newspapers I subscribe to and read:

  1. The Courier-Journal
  2. The Southeast Outlook
  3. Discipleship Journal
  4. PCMagazine
  5. Aerospace America

These are the news sites, news portals, and blogs I read daily:

  1. Fox News
  2. Drudge Report
  3. Hugh Hewitt
  4. Captain's Quarters
  5. Conservative Musings (of course!)
  6. LaShawn Barber's Corner
  7. Little Green Footballs
  8. Michelle Malkin
  9. Power Line
  10. SCSU Scholars
  11. Sister Toldjah

Plus, I read at least one Psalm, one book of Proverbs, and one chapter of another book of the Bible almost every day.

Now, I admit that many of the books I read are not very substantive.  But the books are certainly balanced by the information I read from other sources.

Global Warming and Moose

I think we've found something else to ban.  It seems that the "exhaust" of one moose can compare to a car driven 13,000 kilometers (a little over 8,000 miles).

Here's one more hint that nature itself is a BIG part of global warming!

Global Warming Bumper Sticker

I LOVE this bumper sticker of a Glenn Reynold's quote.

Maybe Al Gore should stick one on the back of his private jet.

Hillary's VP -- McCain?

Captain Ed mentions a couple of VP possibilities for Hillary outside of the normal Obama speculation.  However, based on this, could John McCain be vying for the position?

Fred's Marriage Mistake

So, Fred Thompson has come out against a constitutional amendment supporting the traditional view of marriage (ht: Hugh Hewitt).  He views that as a state issue.  I disagree.  States broadly recognize marriages from other states and it will get quite icky (a technical legal term!) if states have to start specifying what kind of marriages they will recognize from other states.  Thus, a federal standard needs to be applied that can withstand judicial activism, and that requires an amendment.

I had been leaning towards Fred.  This position, however, has me back in neutral.

Transparency in Political Donations

There's been lots of discussion as to the best way to control the political election process, with financial giving and how it's all handled.  My thought is that we shouldn't limit how much someone gives, but we should make political donations extremely transparent.  That way, should a politician vote in a certain way, anyone would have the resources to see if finances had anything to do with that vote.

I think this online lookup is a great attempt at that transparency.  Financial givers to the May Kentucky primaries are listed.

One might complain that it took 3 months to get this out there.  However, at least it's a start in the right direction.
